The New Open Class.
The handiness of the 23 m wingspan makes for easy maneuvering on the ground, but especially in the air. More wingspan doesn’t necessarily mean better performance. This very thin, high aspect ratio wing, with a maximum of 250 liters of water ballast, allowing for a potential wing loading between 39 and 58 kg/m², makes this sailplane extremely flexible, and with the best glide speed so high, a definite safe bet at com- petitions. A completely new level of speed is possible with this aircraft.
We used our network of connections with Lange Aviation and Professor Loek Boermans in the conception and design of the wings, with nine exact interacting wing airfoils that provide laminar flow over 95% of the lower and 75% of the upper wing surfaces and are based on a superelliptical wing geometry. Structural de- sign, ballasting and the patented, extremely light control design were provided by Lange Aviation.
The concept of the outer wing panel with winglets from Professor Mark Maughmer, PhD, and the classic wingtip sweepback guarantee the excellent and typical Schempp-Hirth flight characteristics.
Cockpit and Fuselage.
A new, self-launch optimized fuselage has been designed for the Quintus, providing not only aerodynamic improvements but also details such as bug wiper "garages".
The cockpit has also been completely redesigned and provides both improved safety and ergonomics. A forward-opening canopy makes getting in and out comfortable. Cockpit blends in either visual carbon or carbon-kevlar hybrid fibre, Alcantara lining, engraved flap position indicator and many other details convey a leading position also in the cockpit and guarantee comfort even for the longest high-performance flights.
Simple Engine Operation.
Engine start-up is straightforward and easy thanks to the newly designed automatic. To engage the engine, the pilot only needs to switch on the ignition and press the start button once the engine has been fully extracted. The engine’s start setup is always optimized by a microprocessor to match the current environment.
Disengaging the engine is just as easy. After switching off the ignition on the Ilec engine control unit, the control unit automatically stops and fixes propeller in the correct upright position and the engine gets retracted.
Taxiing is child’s play as the rudder-integrated tail wheel supports simple and precise steering.
