The jet engine provides the Ventus-2cxaJ with a small, handy sustainer engine system that can is easy to operate, yet small and light. All Ventus-2cxa can be retrofitted with this system.
This snappy and agile racing machine has been rigorously adapted to the demands and requirements of ambitious competition pilots. Thanks to the optionally available short 15 m outer wings, flying in the FAI 15 m class does not require any compromises.
With the Jet sustainer engine, Schempp-Hirth offer another save way to return home besides the Turbo sustainer system (developed by Prof. Oehler) - and one that matches the specific requirements of a competition pilot.
Small & Light.
The incremental weight of the jet engine motorization is only a few kilogramms. Because of the compact method of construction of the Käppeler system in combination with the jet engine PSR-T01 it is possible to install the engine system and the corresponding fuselage tank into a Ventus-2cxa. In this minimal configuration, the engine range is still sufficient to reach a near-by airfield in powered flight. If your don’t need any further range, you will get an engine system with an unbeatably small weight, but optional wing fuel tanks can increase the maximum range.
Fuel and Power Requirements.
The jet engine requires a mixture of kerosine (JET A1) and a special oil. The electrical power for the jet engine is provided by a separated battery with its own circuit.
Jet engine operation is very simple thanks to the mostly automated JET Engine Control Unit that prevents operator errors: The extension and start of the jet engine, which was tested up to a speed of 100km/h, is triggered by a single switch; engine performance is controlled by a knob. The JET Engine Control Unit is monitoring all important engine parameters and prevents overrevving the engine.
The engine thrust is available over the full authorized speed range. So the Pilot can choose between a maximum rate of climb like with the Turbo engine system (from Prof. Oehler) at a speed of approximately 95 km/h or a horizontal flight at a speed of approximately of 150 km/h.
After shutting down and cooling down, the engine is automatically retracted.
If required, the engine can be dismantled in a few simple steps and you can fly the airplane as a pure glider.
More Space and Better Visibility.
The completely revamped fuselage has longer overall fuselage length and a newly designed, larger tail optimized for the 18 m wingspan. The cockpit has a slightly longer design and can now accommodate pilots up to 1.9 m height. The new, drag reduced fuselage is also 2 cm wider, offering more leg-room and generally providing more room where needed. Even tall pilots will find ample space in this fuselage.
The canopy rim is cut back, allow better all-round vision for more safety. To further enhance comfort and safety, the fuselage now has a suspended, 5 inch aluminum wheel with a superior working disc brake.
In cooperation with Dr. Karl-Heinz Horstmann (wing geometry, airfoil) and Prof. Mark Maugher, PhD (new winglets), the outer wing has been completely redeveloped. Following concurrent reviews of the design and test results, an optimally tuned outer wing and winglet could been created.
The proven tail units from the Ventus-2ax/bx models with the low drag airfoil from Prof. Loek Boermans and the advantageous double trapezoidal geometry of the elevator were further optimised by extending the tail's span to suit the new 18m wing.

Besides the jet-based sustainer engine, the Ventus-2cxa can now also be ordered with the innovative, silent and environment-friendly Front Electric Sustainer system. This system has the electric engine and the foldable propeller installed in the nose of the fuselage, while the two 16kg batteries are safely stored in a compartment in the fuselage behind the wings.

To fly it is simple and safe, it climbs above average even at high wing loads and can is easy to handle both in the air and on the ground.
