Four day wins, overall victory and plenty of enthusiasm: The Discus-2, equipped with its new, optimized winglets, made a strong impression at the "Coppa Internazionale del Mediterraneo" in Rieti, Italy, which was held as a pre-World Championship event.
Competing in a strong international field, New Zealand pilot Dane Dickinson finished at the top on four of the nine scoring days, securing overall victory in the Racing Class. Julien Duboc from France and Giancarlo Grinza from Italy completed the podium, both flying Ventus. The dominance of the Schempp-Hirth fleet in the two-seater class was equally remarkable: the first 13 places were taken by Arcus, with a Duo Discus finishing in 14th place.
The flying area around Rieti is not only spectacular in terms of scenery, but also presents pilots with demanding and varied conditions. In this highly competitive international field, Dane Dickinson was able to demonstrate the strengths of the Discus-2 with its new winglets to impressive effect. From the very beginning of the competition, Dane was enthusiastic about the handling characteristics of his Discus-2. The new winglets not only provide a noticeable performance increase, but, above all, significantly improve the aircraft's handling. This makes it particularly easy and intuitive to access the aircraft's existing performance potential – both at high speeds and in challenging, rapidly changing conditions. Dane demonstrated this advantage particularly impressively in the demanding and fascinating flying environment around Rieti.
Dane Dickinson's success in Rieti is yet another impressive demonstration of the potential of the new winglets. With them, the Discus-2 combines its proven qualities with a noticeable boost in performance and handling. Its ability to compete at the very highest level internationally has also been demonstrated by several daily wins and podium finishes at this year’s European Championship and Junior World Championship in the Standard Class.
Congratulations to Dane on this outstanding achievement!
